We are delighted to announce we have sponsored a child for a year as part of a new Karate scholarship programme in Colchester.
The initiative is being run in association with non-profit, community interest company Inspired2gether that runs grant funding programmes at SD Arena, which is home to SD School of Martial Arts, Ultimate Ninja UK and Energyze Gym.
The programme aims to help children aged between 6-16 years from low socio-economic and other challenging backgrounds by building their confidence through the discipline of martial arts.
Studies have shown that structured physical activity and martial arts in particular helps children grow both mentally and physically as they progress into young adulthood.
To ensure they fit in with the rest of the class, our funding will be used to purchase the proper kit, which includes their Gi and first white belt, gum shield, hand and foot pads and three belts through gradings.
It will also cover them for a full 50 weeks of classes, three gradings in the year, as well as their membership licence and insurance.
Commenting on why he chose to fund a child through the programme, Managing Director, Peter Cannon said: “I have two teenage sons and I’m fortunate to be able to finance their various sporting interests but there are many parents who are struggling to find the money for essentials let alone non-essentials, especially during the current economic crisis.
“As an Essex-based business, I wanted to give something back by easing the financial burden for a local family, while giving a child the opportunity to do something they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.
“I’ve known Sean at SD School of Martial Arts for some time and know how passionate he is about making fitness and martial arts accessible for all, and about supporting the local community, so when he approached me about the sponsorship I immediately agreed.”
Each child who takes part in the programme will be coached by highly experienced black belt instructors, who have coached many European and world champions, including the current gold medal world champion who continues to train at SD School of Martial Arts.
“We will receive updates of our sponsored child’s progress after each grading and will be informed about how well they are engaging with the programme,” Peter continued.
“We’ll also find out how they’ve developed in terms of their personal growth, which I’m particularly interested in. I’m really hoping that our small amount of generosity could prove to be a pivotal point in a young person’s life.”
