Oak tree management at Rayleigh Primary School

Oak tree management at Rayleigh School, Essex

Tree & Lawn Company and Skippers Ground Maintenance have successfully collaborated on several projects at Colchester Sports Park, the 76-acre indoor and outdoor sports and leisure site, located at the Colchester Northern Gateway.

For their most recent project, Skippers Ground Maintenance called upon Tree & Lawn Company for their expertise in a vital task along the boundary of a primary school in Rayleigh, Essex.

The project

The task involved reducing the spread of a large oak tree that had started to pose a risk due to its branches extending over nearby Low Voltage utility and BT wires. Given the potential hazard of the nearby power lines and the importance of maintaining public safety, the project required careful planning and execution.

The first step was to consult with the electricity board to ensure the work could proceed without a power shutdown, thus avoiding any unnecessary disruption to the local community.

With clearance obtained and no shutdown deemed necessary, the focus shifted to minimising the impact on the nearby residents.

A one-day road closure was implemented to facilitate the safe use of a large Mobile Elevated Work Platform, which was deemed the most proficient method for reducing the tree’s limbs, managing the risk of falling debris, and protecting the overhead cables.

By completing the operation in February, the team was able to work on the tree before it came into leaf, while avoiding the bird nesting season and the period when tree sap begins to rise, which could have added complexity to the task.

The outcome

The project was completed with efficiency, ensuring the safety of the team and public, while causing minimal inconvenience to the local community.

The team’s effective management of the road closure, coupled with their meticulous approach to reducing the tree’s limbs, underscored their expertise and professionalism and steadfast focus on safety at all times.
