No matter how well you keep your lawn, a spot of seeding is sometimes needed for effective lawn care. Lawns can be thinned out by the weather, insects and animals, and sometimes even grass diseases. Seeding is used to repair these damaged areas, and if the damage is bad enough, then it’s used to completely rebuild the lawn before regular maintenance. There are three kinds of seeding – spot seeding, over seeding, and renovation – and which one you go for all depends on the condition of your lawn. We’ve got some springtime seeding tips to keep your garden looking its best!
Make sure you use the seeding method that’s best for your lawn
Spot seeding is the quick and easy method for areas worn out by footfall, the weather, or whatever reason. This involves using a rake to break open the surface of the soil, seeding the open ground, and gently patting it back down again. Over seeding is best for when your whole lawn just needs to be thickened up, by aerating the lawn and spreading seeds across the whole area. However, this won’t work too well if there’s a thick layer of thatch. Renovation is for when a lawn is so damaged that it needs to be ‘rebuilt’, with an over seeding process taking care of it.
Consider the season
Although seeding is a good idea at any time of year if your lawn needs it, it’s actually best in the autumn and winter months. Don’t let this put you off as we approach spring, as it’s still as beneficial as it would be at any other time of year; you just need to give a little extra water and care, as you may have other plants and weeds competing for the space and water.
Keep your soil and seed moist
Seeding in the spring or summer time will likely leave you with less natural water from rainfall. Keeping the soil and seed moist will encourage faster germination, in turn making your new grass grow quicker.
Take care of the seeded area
Rather than seeding and then leaving your lawn to it, keep up with the right maintenance and you’ll get the best results. Make sure to lightly sprinkle the lawn with water daily – several times on hot days – and avoid using any weed killers until the new grass has grown and been mowed four or five times.
