Essex Highways called upon our out-of-hours, emergency response team to address a critical situation: a fallen tree had completely blocked a country road, posing a significant hazard.
The callout
The tree, once sturdy and robust, had reached its natural end, toppling across a tight, winding country lane devoid of street lighting. The resulting blockage, dense with debris, presented a potential danger for unsuspecting road users, especially under the cover of a dark winter night.
Having assessed the task, the team’s first undertaking was to implement road management measures because the tree’s position offered no possibility of bypass. This required them to setup roadblocks to divert traffic along alternative routes to ensure road traffic safety, as well as the safety of the team.
The removal process posed several challenges. The team first had to clear a significant amount of debris to gain access to the tree. They then methodically cut away the branches from the main trunk, allowing them to section the trunk for safe removal. This step-by-step approach was vital for efficiently clearing the tree while again ensuring the safety of the team and road users.
An equally important part of the project was the clean-up process. The fallen tree had dragged mud and small debris across the road, creating additional hazards. The team meticulously swept the road, removing these dangers to ensure the safety of all future road users.
